Homemade Pellet Mill Die, Carbon Or Stainless Steel?
There is no doubt that the most important component of a flat die pellet mill is the die. The design and the condition of the die will decide if you make pellets or just block the pellet press die with material.
The die of flat die pellet mill is a very over looked component, but not really given the respect it deserves. The die not only dictates if you make any pellets at all, it also affects pellet quality, pellet mill productivity and energy consumption. Therefore when it comes to producing the die, the homemade pellet mill manufacturers have a few questions to answer. The first questions is should they use carbon steel or stainless steel to produce the die? Each has its own benefits, so either can be a suitable choice. Stainless steel has one specific advantage is terms of increased corrosion resistance. Therefore if the pellet mill has not been used for a significant amount of time, a stainless steel die can make it quicker to get going. However stainless has some significant disadvantages compared to carbon steel. For instance a stainless steel die is more likely to break, and also has a shorter operating life. Therefore generally a carbon steel die is more suitable for the homemade pellet mill, but must be kept in good condition. It is important to make sure the holes in a carbon steel pellet mill die are cleaned for corrosion. The corrosion will increase the resistance of the hole. Therefore this is usually the factor that leads to pellet mill die blockages. Thus before you try to produce wood pellets for instance, it is important to run through some low density oily materials to clean the die holes and reduce their resistance to the desired compression. If needed, you can also add a small amount of high quality sand to provide some extra abrasion to the corrosion. However you must not process this material too many times as you will obviously wear down the surface of the die and rollers which you do not want.
